Jimmy Ernst (1920–1984) was a German‑born American painter and influential figure in mid‑20th‑century art whose work bridged Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. Born Hans‑Ulrich Ernst in Cologne to Surrealist pioneer Max Ernst and art historian Luise Straus‑Ernst, he emigrated to the United States in 1938 to escape the rise of Nazism and became immersed in New York’s avant‑garde, working first in the Museum of Modern Art’s film library and soon becoming director of Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century Gallery. After his first solo exhibition in 1943, Ernst developed a distinctive artistic voice, evolving from biomorphic, Surrealist‑inflected forms into dynamic abstraction and later incorporating linear structures and figurative elements, including Native American motifs. A member of the influential “Irascible Eighteen” group of abstract painters, he taught at Brooklyn College and exhibited widely; his work is included in major museum collections, and he received numerous honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and election to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.
