Edward Herbert Barnard (1855–1909) was an American painter primarily known for his representational and impressionist-influenced landscapes, genre scenes, and portraits. Born in Belmont, Massachusetts, he initially pursued architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before shifting his focus to art, becoming a member of the inaugural class at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts in 1877. In the mid-1880s, Barnard traveled to Paris to refine his skills at the Académie Julian under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. During his time in France, he viewed an exhibition of works by Claude Monet, which deeply inspired him to paint with outdoor light and embrace a brighter, tonalist palette. After returning to Massachusetts in 1890, he balanced his artistic career with a teaching position at Bradford College, actively exhibiting his coastal views of Cape Cod and Mystic, Connecticut, at prominent venues such as the Paris Salon, the Boston Art Club, and the National Academy of Design.
