George Riecke (1848–1930) was an American painter best known for realistic rural landscapes populated with cattle, sheep, and other farm animals. Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Riecke was active in New Orleans from approximately 1887 to 1902, where he became a member of the Artists Association of New Orleans. His paintings typically combine pastoral landscapes with carefully observed livestock, marshes, waterways, and farm settings, often emphasizing atmospheric light and tranquil rural scenes. Riecke exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1900, and his work is represented in institutional collections, including the Smithsonian’s record for Pastoral Scene with Cows. Although relatively little is known about his life and training, his paintings have continued to appear in the American art market and are recognized for their accomplished draftsmanship and appealing late-19th-century pastoral character.
