Dorothy Thorpe (1901-1989) American, Silver Painted Papier Mache Madonna Under Glass Dome.
Size: 13 1/2 x 21 in.
Dorothy Thorpe (1901-1989) was an American mid‑century designer best known for her distinctive glassware, marketed under “Dorothy Thorpe Originals.” Born in Salt Lake City, she later moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s, where she began designing tableware and drinkware. Rather than blowing glass herself, she purchased blanks and applied signature techniques such as sandblasting, etching, and silver or sterling‑metal overlay. Her early work reflected Art Deco simplicity, while later designs incorporated floral motifs inspired by her travels, including irises, roses, and eucalyptus. Iconic pieces include her 1950s “Roly‑Poly” silver‑banded tumblers and the geometric “Atomic Splash” line, exemplifying mid‑century modern style. Although she also explored ceramics, Lucite, and home decor, her innovative, elegant glass designs remain her enduring legacy among collectors.
