Demétre Chiparus (1886–1947) was a Romanian-born sculptor who became one of the leading figures of the Art Deco movement in Paris. Born in Dorohoi, Romania, and later active in France, Chiparus achieved international acclaim for his highly stylized bronze and ivory sculptures depicting dancers, performers, mythological figures, and fashionable women. Influenced by the Ballets Russes, ancient Egyptian art, and contemporary theater, he developed a distinctive chryselephantine technique that combined cast bronze with carved ivory to create elegant, dynamic figures. His works epitomize the glamour, sophistication, and exoticism of the 1920s and 1930s, and today they are among the most sought-after examples of Art Deco sculpture.
