David Belling was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1934. He was heavily influenced by Norman Rockwell in his youth, and studied design, photography, and advertising in college, moving to Anaheim, California in the late 1950s to work as a creative director for various companies. He began painting watercolors as a hobby and found a knack for it, capturing stunning harbor views with realistic depth and vibrant colors. He bought a home in Cape Coral after falling in love with the local scenery, and retired there in 2004 to focus on art full time. His scenes of Old Florida, particularly the Keys and lighthouses, are highly appreciated and can be found in many museums, galleries, and private collections throughout the state, and he continues to paint to this day, organizing annual trips with various other artists to paint plein aire in his native Wisconsin.
