Peter Koster (1891-1978) was a Dutch-born artist who fled World War I for the United States in 1915 and settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Trained in fine art and period decoration, he initially worked for interior design companies, painting and decorating furniture and fixtures. Inspired by an exhibition, he moved to Boston in 1934 to study New England coastal scenes, eventually opening his own studio in Rockport and becoming best known for his marine paintings. Koster later moved to Florida, taught art at Port Charlotte University, and became a regular fixture of the nearby Sarasota artists colony until his death.
