Chinese cloisonné is a traditional decorative art form that involves applying enamel to metal objects using intricate wire partitions, or cloisons, to create detailed patterns and images. Originating during the Yuan Dynasty and reaching its peak during the Ming (especially the Xuande period, 1426–1435) and Qing Dynasties, cloisonné is celebrated for its vibrant colors, especially deep blues and turquoise, and often features motifs like dragons, lotus flowers, and auspicious symbols. The technique involves soldering fine metal wires onto a copper or bronze surface to outline a design, then filling the spaces with enamel paste before firing and polishing. Chinese cloisonné objects—ranging from vases and censers to jewelry and figurines—were both domestic treasures and important export goods, admired for their blend of artistic finesse and technical precision. Today, cloisonné remains a symbol of imperial craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
