Japanese Pigeon Blood Red and Green Dragon Cylindrical Cloisonne Vase. Thin cylindrical vase with dark red 'pigeon's blood' ground and bright green three-toed Eastern dragon. Marked on base in green maker's stamp.

Japanese cloisonné, known as shippo-yaki, is a highly refined enamel art that flourished during the late Edo and Meiji periods, gaining international acclaim for its exquisite craftsmanship and vibrant colors. This technique involves creating intricate designs by filling delicate metal compartments (cloisons) with layers of colored enamel, which are then carefully fired and polished to produce a smooth, glossy surface. Japanese artisans elevated cloisonné beyond its earlier Chinese origins by developing innovative methods such as musen (wireless cloisonné) that allowed for more fluid, painterly effects without visible metal outlines. Often featuring motifs inspired by nature—like flowers, birds, and waves—Japanese cloisonné became a symbol of the nation’s artistic sophistication and was highly prized both domestically and as export art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
