(2) Vintage Japanese Kokeshi Dolls. Pair of vintage Japanese traditional word carved kokeshi dolls. Hand painted and signed by artist.

Kokeshi dolls are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, originally handcrafted by artisans in the Tōhoku region of northern Japan as souvenirs for visitors to hot spring resorts. Characterized by their simple, limbless cylindrical bodies and round heads, kokeshi are adorned with hand-painted floral or geometric patterns and expressive, minimalist facial features. Each region developed its own stylistic variations, known as dento kokeshi, while modern shingata kokeshi reflect more individual artistic expression. Beyond their charming appearance, kokeshi are often seen as symbols of childhood innocence, protection, and remembrance, sometimes believed to carry spiritual significance. Today, they are cherished both as folk art and collectible objects that reflect a blend of cultural tradition and personal artistry.
