Charles Bragg (1931-2017) was an American sculptor, painter, and author celebrated for his highly humorous and satirical artwork. Born in St. Louis to vaudeville performers, he spent his youth traveling on tour before attending New York’s High School of Music & Art. He worked a variety of unconventional jobs, including stints as a truck driver, factory worker, and stand-up comedian until he settled on an artistic career. Once he settled in California, his creative focus shifted to portraying the systemic flaws and politics of American society, calling himself an “observer” of the human race. His unique style brought him widespread recognition, earning him commissions from Playboy magazine and a dedicated PBS documentary titled “Charles Bragg - One of a Kind.” His artistic legacy is preserved in several satirical books he authored on law and medicine, and he won many awards, including the Gold Medal for the National Society of Illustrators as well as the Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York.
