Gary Larson (1950– ) is an American cartoonist best known for creating the single-panel comic series The Far Side, whose surreal humor, anthropomorphic animals, scientific themes, and offbeat view of everyday life made it one of the most influential and widely syndicated comics of the late twentieth century. Born in Tacoma, Larson studied communications at Washington State University while developing a lifelong interest in biology and the natural world, subjects that frequently appeared in his work. Running from 1980 to 1995, The Far Side reached more than 1,900 newspapers worldwide and spawned numerous bestselling collections. Larson retired the strip at the height of its popularity but returned in 2020 with new online cartoons, reaffirming his reputation as a master of intelligent, eccentric humor.
