The 18th through early 19th Century British School of portraiture evolved into a supremely popular aesthetic that spread through the continent. It often portrayed a member of a noble or wealthy family in fine clothing, seated or standing, staring directly at the artist or viewer, and usually holding or indicating their favorite possession, toy, pet, or royal signifiers next to them. This painting depicts such a child, who remarkably held still long enough for the unknown artist to capture his narrowed eyes and sardonic smirk, undoubtedly as he thought about the hares and fowl he would bring down once finished modeling.
