Thomas Howard (1536-1572) was a second cousin of Queen Elizabeth I and held many offices during the early part of her reign. However, his plan to marry Mary, Queen of Scots, in order to solve the current succession crisis, resulted in him becoming embroiled in the 1569 Rising of the North, the attempt to overthrow Elizabeth. He was imprisoned and later tried, found guilty, and sentenced to execution after his involvement in the Ridolfi Plot, becoming the first nobleman executed during Elizabeth's reign, much to her reluctance. His execution was in 1572, the year this portrait is dated.
