Robert J. Winship (1927-2019) affectionately known as “Bob,” was a University of Minnesota graduate and Navy veteran who served on the USS Heyliger DE 510. After retiring from a career in finance at Paine Webber & Company he settled in North Oaks, Minnesota where pursued his lifelong ambition of becoming a wildlife artist. Originally a woodcarver, he transitioned to bronze sculpture, teaching himself the intricate “lost wax” casting process to perfectly capture the details of the natural world. He was particularly known for his self-taught expertise in the fine art of patination, and his numerous sculptures, which primarily featured birds and other wildlife, are held in the public headquarters of major corporations, still featured in national art shows, and are highly sought by collectors the world over.
