Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) was a French painter whose prolific output was heavily influenced by Realists and characterized by a distinctive "Miserabilist" style. His adult work featured thick black lines, elongated forms, and stark scenes of despair, with his first showing in 1946 leading to him being celebrated as one of the greatest stars of the European art world by age 21. Despite his immense early fame—which led The New York Times to call him one of the "Fabulous Five" cultural figures of post-war France—interest in his work waned in the 1960s due to his lavish lifestyle. Buffet, who was openly bisexual and whose life was plagued by depression and illness, is estimated to have created over 8,000 works before his death by suicide in 1999.
