Christian Ernest Dior (1905-1957) was a legendary French fashion designer who founded one of the world’s most prestigious haute couture houses, Christian Dior SE, in 1946. Born into a wealthy Normandy family, Dior initially pursued a passion for art and sketch-making before gaining valuable industry experience working under designers Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong. Backed by industrialist Marcel Boussac, Dior debuted his revolutionary “New Look” collection in 1947, which featured rounded shoulders, cinched waists, and opulent, full skirts that rejected wartime fabric rationing. This voluptuous aesthetic effectively reestablished post-war Paris as the undisputed epicenter of the international fashion world and made Dior a global arbiter of style. Throughout the 1950s, the highly superstitious designer introduced a series of uniquely themed, seasonal collections that artfully balanced rigid structural elegance with an evolving trend toward relaxed comfort. Following Dior’s fatal third heart attack in 1957 at age 52, his carefully chosen 19-year-old assistant, Yves Saint Laurent, stepped up to succeed him and carry on the brand’s immense cultural legacy.
