Widely regarded as one of the foremost French fashion designers of the 20th Century, Yves Saint Laurent (1936-2008) rose to international stardom in 1957 when he became the head designer of the House of Dior at just 21 years old. After a brief, tumultuous conscription into the French Army led to his firing from Dior, he successfully sued the fashion house and co-founded his own eponymous label, YSL, in 1961 alongside his partner Pierre Bergé. Saint Laurent’s visionary designs revolutionized modern womenswear by blending elegance with comfort, famously introducing iconic trends like the geometric 1965 Mondrian dresses, the “Le Smoking” women's tuxedo suit, and safari jackets. He became a trailblazer for democratic style by pioneering high-end ready-to-wear lines, while also being celebrated for his diverse runway casting and incorporation of non-European cultural influences. Despite battling severe, lifelong struggles with substance abuse and mental health under the pressure of the industry, he continued to design his couture collections until his retirement in 2002. Following his death from brain cancer in 2008, his immense cultural legacy has been preserved through global museum exhibitions and dedicated foundations in Paris, Marrakech, and his hometown of Oran, Algeria.
