Our Lady of Kazan, also called Mother of God of Kazan, is a holy icon of the highest stature within the Russian Orthodox Church, representing the Virgin Mary as the protector and patroness of the city of Kazan, and a palladium of all of Russia and Rus’, known as the Holy Protectress of Russia. As is the case for any holy entity under a Patriarchate in communion within the greater Eastern Orthodox Church, it is venerated by all Orthodox faithful. According to legend the icon was acquired from Constantinople in 1579 after having been lost since 1438 and was stolen (and probably destroyed) around 1904. In copies of the work the icon is traditionally presented as a portrait of the face of Mary on the left side of the image, leaning over to rest her cheek against Jesus on the right side, who sits in her arms. They are both usually crowned by halos, and the background is often empty, although on occasion there is writing composed of scripture or blessings, depending on the nature of the icon and where it will be placed.
