André François (born André Farkas, 1915–2005) was a Hungarian-born French graphic artist, cartoonist, illustrator, painter, and sculptor renowned for his inventive and playful visual style. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and later under the celebrated poster artist A. M. Cassandre in Paris, he adopted his new name upon becoming a French citizen in 1939. François created a wide array of work, including posters, magazine cartoons, children’s book illustrations, and book covers, often marked by a rough-hewn, deceptively childlike, and sometimes surreal aesthetic. He also explored abstraction, sculpture, collage, and printmaking, devoting himself increasingly to painting and mixed-media works later in life. His legacy endures as an artist who bridged commercial and fine art, combining humor, design, and imaginative insight in a distinctive, modern voice.
