Alfredo Barbini (1912-2007) was a master glass artist born on the island of Murano, Italy, into a family with generations of glassmaking tradition, beginning formal training at age ten at the Abate Zanetti design school before working for prominent glass firms including Ferro Toso, Cristalleria Murano, Zecchin-Martinuzzi, and Seguso Vetri d’Arte. Between 1936 and 1944 he was a partner and master glassblower at Societa Anonima Vetri Artistici Muranesi, and in the late 1940s he partnered with notable Murano masters Archimede Seguso, Napoleone Martinuzzi, and Gino Cenedese, before founding his own firm, Vetreria Alfredo Barbini, in 1950 with financial support from Salviati & Co. His work, often featuring heavy, thick sculptural forms, gained international recognition through exhibitions at the Venice Biennale from 1950 to 1961, and Barbini’s daughter Oceania became sales manager in 1952 with his son Flavio joining him as a designer in 1968. He received numerous honors, including the Osella d’Oro in 1980 and the title “Commendatore” and “1989 Venetian of the Year,” and his glass works remain highly prized by collectors worldwide.
