Verve was a modernist Parisian art magazine published by Teriade between 1937 and 1960, with their first cover featuring artwork by Henri Matisse. It published 38 issues in 10 volumes including lithographs by the most prominent artists of the Parisian art scene of the first half of the 20th century, with signed individual works produced as well by contributing artists and writers.

Alexander "Sandy" Calder (1898-1976) was an American sculptor and painter who pioneered kinetic sculpture and is renowned for his mobiles. Born into a family of artists in Pennsylvania, he initially studied mechanical engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology before pursuing art at the Art Students League in New York. His engineering background greatly influenced his work, leading to the creation of wire sculptures, which he called "drawing in space," and his invention of the mobile. After moving to Paris in 1926, he became a key figure in the Abstract movement. He gained international acclaim in the 1950s for his wind-powered mobiles and large-scale installations. His later career included designing a Douglas DC-8 airplane and a BMW race car. Calder's work is held in permanent collections worldwide, including at the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
