MacKenzie-Childs, Ltd., a manufacturer of ceramics and home decor, was founded in 1983 in Aurora, New York by Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs, constructed on a defunct 1800s dairy farm that eventually became the site of their annual Barn Sale events. After experiencing financial difficulties in the 1990s the company was purchased in 2001 by Pleasant Rowland, founder of American Girl, who restructured the business and maintained its headquarters in Aurora. Following a trademark dispute with the original founders, the company was sold to Twin Lakes Capital equity firm in 2008 and later received investment from Castanea Partners in 2014. Today the company, led by CEO John Ling and employing over 250 people, continues to produce home decor, furniture, cookware, and serveware in its signature styles.
