Johann Elias Ridinger (1698–1767) was a German painter, engraver, and publisher renowned for his masterful depictions of animals, hunting scenes, and rural life, making him one of the most important animal artists of the 18th century. Born in Ulm, he trained under the painter Christoph Resch before settling in Augsburg, where he established a prolific workshop and publishing enterprise. Ridinger is best known for his finely detailed etchings and engravings of horses, deer, dogs, and hunting subjects, works that combined careful natural observation with Baroque drama and elegance. His prints circulated widely across Europe and were collected by aristocrats and sportsmen, influencing sporting and animal art for generations.
