Louis Icart (1888–1950) was a French painter, illustrator, and printmaker best known for his elegant Art Deco–era etchings that epitomize the glamour and sophistication of early 20th-century Parisian life. Born in Toulouse, he moved to Paris as a young man and developed a distinctive style characterized by graceful female figures, fashionably dressed women, romantic encounters, and playful eroticism, often rendered with fluid line, soft color, and refined decorative detail. Icart’s work gained international popularity between the 1910s and 1930s, particularly in the United States, where his limited-edition etchings were avidly collected. Influenced by Rococo artists such as Fragonard as well as contemporary fashion illustration, Icart remains a defining figure of Art Deco printmaking and a symbol of the era’s elegance and escapism.
