Eugene E. Loving (1907/1908-1971) was an American artist and etcher best known for his finely detailed architectural prints that celebrate the historic streets, courtyards and buildings of New Orleans’ French Quarter. Drawn to the city during the Great Depression by its bohemian atmosphere, he became an active member of the New Orleans Arts and Crafts Club in the 1940s and helped revive interest in the traditional medium of etching at a time when it had waned in popularity in the United States. Loving’s work—primarily limited-edition etchings and serigraphs—showcases his mastery of line and shadow and reflects a deep affection for historic architecture and urban charm, with human figures appearing only occasionally in his compositions.
