Yvonne Davis was born in 1946 to migrant workers traveling through the Pacific Northwest. Despite their many travels, they worked hard to keep her in schools, and by the time she graduated she had attended almost thirty different ones in every state on the West Coast. In the early 1960s she went with her family to South and Central America, where she taught herself to paint murals to supplement the family income. A necessary hobby became a life-long passion, as she sought out art in many forms over the next decade. In 1966 she began assisting a Japanese artist with woodblock prints, which led to her interest in etching and engraving, as well as a decision to travel overseas, spending time in Taiwan, Japan, and Germany. Her ability to combine modern ideas with timeless printing techniques allowed her to support herself along her journey, and eventually she wound up in Gloucester, Maine, where she married and had two children in the late 1970s. Seeking a better climate due to their health issues, she moved her family back to the Pacific Northwest, settling in Seattle, Washington. Here she formed her own etching company, Crossroads Studio, and continues to produce prints, holding one-woman shows at local venues annually. Her work is appreciated throughout the Northwest for its non-traditional approach to traditional techniques, and her prints, particularly those of birds, can be found in galleries and private collections along the West Coast of the United States and Canada.
