Yukio Katsuda was born in 1941 in Kyoto, Japan. His earliest memory was the day of “The Glorious Death of the One Hundred Million,” when the population of the country waited to hear a radio message from the Emperor potentially instructing them to commit mass suicide rather than surrender to the Allies. He grew up in one of the least damaged cities in Japan, today one of the largest preserved centers of their prewar cultural heritage, and was introduced to music, literature, and art at an early age with a strong interest in both Eastern and Western traditions. He attended Kyōgei (Kyoto City University of Arts) where he began to experiment first with woodblock printing and later silkscreen printing. By the late 1970s he had nearly tripled the usual number of inks traditionally used in prints in order to create intense, vibrant, seemingly three-dimensional images. He primarily drew inspiration from nature, crafting landscapes and still lifes that incorporated postmodernist techniques and multicultural motifs into his works. In the late 1980s he had his first touring exhibition in the United States, and has since divided his time between home studios in both countries. Today his pieces can be found in public and private collections around the world, including Scripps College in California, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
