Yanni Posnakoff was born August 4th, 1933 in Thessaloniki, Greece, and was profoundly affected as a child by witnessing the wartime murders of his mother and father. His prodigal intellect led him to receive a Fulbright Scholarship in 1954 after graduating from the Advanced School of Marine Engineers, allowing him to move to the United States where he first attended the University of California, Berkeley before completing his degree in naval architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1958. While working as a maritime engineer in Baltimore he discovered the local bohemian arts community and was encouraged to explore artwork by Maelcum Soul, moving to New York City in 1965 to devote himself entirely to art. He opened an arts cafe and bakery that doubled as an exhibition center for the neighborhood, eventually expanding into funding education for budding artists by opening various restaurants and selling prints of his Abstract Expressive paintings, watercolors, and pastels. Obsessed with angels since the age of four, he incorporated nearly a million of them into his pieces over his career, opening the Angel Gallery in 1988 to feed the homeless before returning to Greece to live out the rest of his life making art solely for charity until his death on July 10th, 2020.
