Yaacov Agam, born Yaakov Gibstein on May 11th, 1928, in Rishon LeZion, Mandatory Palestine, is an influential Israeli artist renowned for his contributions to kinetic art and optical art. After training at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem he moved to Zurich, Switzerland to study under Johannes Itten in 1949, before permanently relocating to Paris, France and pioneering a form of art that combines painting and sculpture, often incorporating moving parts or optical illusions that alter the viewer’s perception. One of his most famous works is the “Agamograph,” a type of lenticular print that changes its appearance based on the viewing angle. Agam’s innovative approach has earned him international recognition, with exhibitions in major museums and public spaces worldwide.
