Wood & Hughes was a maker of sterling and coin flatware and hollowware that was originally founded in 1834 in New York City by William Gale, Jacob Wood, and Jasper W. Hughes as Gale, Wood & Hughes. Gale left in 1845, at which time the company name was shortened. In 1899 the company was made an offer they couldn’t refuse by Graff, Washbourne & Dunn and sold them the plant, keeping their remaining stock and selling it from a small storefront until they closed for good in 1903. Graff, Washbourne & Dunn continued to produce several of their patterns for the next several decades, before they themselves were acquired by Gorham in 1961.
