This is a painting of an Everglades interior scene by Willie Daniels, one of the original Florida Highwaymen, a group of African American artists from the Fort Pierce area of Florida who taught themselves how to paint and were forced to sell their paintings from the trunks of their cars in the 1950's and '60's because of segregation and discrimination. They sold their paintings along U.S. Highway 1 in Florida for as little a $10 apiece, just to escape the tomato fields and orange groves where they were forced to work because of the color of their skin. They sold their paintings like this too because galleries didn't allow them in. There were 26 artists in the original Highwaymen group, and sometimes they would go door to door selling their paintings just to survive. Back then, people didn't realize the importance of these paintings, and when their work was rediscovered in the 1990's, well, today the paintings are recognized as the work of American folk artists. The painting is signed in the lower right and it's dated 1970 on the back. It also has Al Black's signature on it; he was another Florida Highwaymen and he added his signature in 1981. The overall size is 26 1/2 x 38 1/2 in. wide and the sight size is 22 5/8 x 34 3/4 in. wide.
