This is an oil on board by Mary Ann Carroll, the only female member of the original twenty-six artists known as the Florida Highwaymen. She was born to a share-cropping family in Georgia, learned how to paint from Alfred Hair, one of the original Highwaymen, and took odd jobs to survive while her paintings helped pay the bills. She was a pastor at various churches, and in 2012 was recognized by the White House for her skills and grit, and she was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. The painting is signed in the lower right and it has her name, address, and phone number on the back, and you can find the house still listed at 2901 Dunbar St. in Fort Pierce. The painting also has several motel stamp marks on the back, all saying "Park Motel, 1931 No. Federal Highway, Fort Pierce". North Federal Highway is US Highway 1, where the highwaymen sold a lot of their paintings. The overall size is 27 x 39 in. wide and the sight size is 22 5/8 x 35 in. wide.
