William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon and received a classical education before marrying Anne Hathaway and eventually joining the London theater scene by 1592. As a playwright and actor, he became a founding member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, later renamed the King’s Men, which built the famous Globe Theatre in 1599. Between 1589 and 1613, he produced a vast body of work including historical comedies and world-renowned tragedies such as Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth. He retired to Stratford in 1613 following the burning of the Globe and died three years later on his birthday in 1616. In 1623, his colleagues published the First Folio, a definitive collection of 36 plays that ensured the survival of his dramatic legacy, and today Shakespeare is regarded as the world’s pre-eminent dramatist, having standardized modern English and created works that remain in constant performance and study across every major language.
