J & W. Moir was a silver company in New York City, founded when William Moir purchased a business from his former employer Emmet T. Pell on Hudson Street in 1844 along with his brother John. William had immigrated from Scotland to New York around 1840, was first apprenticed to watchmaker Alexander Martin before becoming a journeyman to Pell, and continued to run the company as simply William Moir Ltd. after John retired in 1869. In 1870 William commissioned a five-story, cast-iron-clad structure from the architect Theodore A. Tribit on the corner of Sixth Avenue and West 23rd Street to move the business to, which remains a historic landmark to this day, and rapidly expanded their lines to include bronzes and imported European jewelry. John died in 1895, and William passed away the following year, at which time the business closed for good, with many of their silver pieces, jewelry, and watches still sought by collectors around the world.
