This book is titled "Wild Scenes Of A Hunter's Life", written by John Frost and published by Miller, Orton in New York and Auburn in 1857, and the first edition came out in 1855, so this is a second edition (the thirty first thousand). The title page reads "Wild Scenes Of the Hunter's Life; Or The Hunting And Hunters Of All Nations, Exhibiting The Modes Adopted By Gerard, Cummings, And Other Celebrated Hunters, In Taking the Elephant, Lion, Rhinoceros, Tiger, Hyena, Panther, Bear, Giraffe, Antelope, Chamois, Wild Board, Buffalo, Bison, Llama, Ourang-Outang, The Monkey Tribe, And Various Others. Wild Animals of the Globe. By John Frost, LL. D. With Three Hundred Illustrations.", and it is a classic hunting book describing ancient hunting and hunting different game all across the world. John Frost (1800-1859) apparently was born in Kennebunk, Maine and died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and this book was published two years before he died. He also wrote a biography about Major General Zachary Taylor (1847), who was famous for carrying on a war with Mexico and later became twelfth President of the United States. Frost also wrote a history of the colonies of the United States from the discovery of America until the start of the Revolutionary War (1849), a naval history about the major nations of the world (1851), and a history of America's generals from the founding of the republic to the present time (1852), so he clearly was engaged in history and loved writing. The book has black lettering and a hunting scene on the spine, embossed covers, yellow endpapers with the owners name and "1858" on the front flyleaf, a colored frontispiece, the title page, a two-page Preface, four pages of Contents, 467 pages of text, the last leaf has a small list of books published by Miller, Orton, and the book has a second colored plate and all those engravings and illustrations. The book is 8vo. and measures 8 x 5 5/8 in. wide, the binding is tight, the pages and illustrations are clean, with light browning on the endpapers, light brown spots on the frontispiece, tissue guard, and title page, light offset from a couple of the illustrations, fading and light rubbing on the spine, on the front and back covers and at the tips, and two tips are turned in. Still a fascinating and well illustrated book about hunting around the world. #118 #1653
