This two-volume set is titled "Frank Forester's Sporting Scenes And Characters. Containing Full Remarks On All Kinds Of English And American Shooting, Game, And All Kinds Of Sporting" by Henry William Herbert … With Numerous Illustrations, From Original Designs By Darley and published in Philadelphia by T. B. Peterson. There are five hunting stories inside the two volumes, with undated title pages, but both volumes are dated 1857 on the copyright pages and Volume I is dated 1843 on the reverse of the title page for "My Shooting Box", the first story in the book, and 1843 on the reverse of the title page for "The Deerstalkers, A Sporting Tale Of The South-Western Counties", the second story in the book; Volume II contains "The Warwick Woodlands", "Tom Draw's Visit to Pine Brook", and "The Quorndon Hounds: Or, A Virginian at Melton Mowbray", with 1850 and 1856 on the reverse of the title pages for the stories in the second volume, and according to WorldCat, these are first editions. There's gilt lettering and gilt decorated hunting scenes on the spines, embossed covers, blank yellow endpapers, a bookstore label after the front endpapers, frontispieces and tissue guards before the vignette title pages, "Chas Shuster" inscribed on the vignette title page in Volume I and Shuster's name inscribed on the regular title page in Volume II, and Volume I has 179 pages for the first story, 198 pages for the second one, and 12 pages of ads for books by T.B. Peterson; Volume II has 200 pages for the first two stories, followed by 173 pages for the last story and 10 pages of ads for books by Peterson at the rear. The first volume also has newspaper clippings about Forester's suicide in 1858 attached to the front endpapers. "Frank Forester" was the pseudonym of Henry William Herbert (1807 - 1858), an English-born novelist and sportswriter, and as Forester, Herbert was credited with creating a great interest in American hunting and field sports. Felix Darley (1822 - 1888) was an American artist known for illustrating works by 19th-century authors like James Fenimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Washington Irving, among others. The books are 8vo. and measure 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. wide, and aside from loose frontispieces in each volume, the bindings are tight, with faded lettering and faded hunting scenes on the spines, occasional brown spots, wear on the heel and crown of both volumes, a chip and light loss on the heel of the second volume, light wear at the tips and a couple of tips are turned in, and the first volume is slightly rolled on the spine. #119 #1660
