WeWOOD was developed in 2009 in Lamporecchio, Italy, and its trademark was registered by Alessandro Rosano, Daniele Guidi and Emma Bogren in 2010, under the company name Fratelli Diversi. Prior to starting the company, Guidi was an accessories distributor and Rosano was a shoe designer. After a year of operations, the company opened a regional office in the United States in 2011. Initially the company sold two designs, Date (analog) and Crono (digital). The watches were made completely from wood with the exception of the glass, movement, battery, pins, and clasp. They use Japanese Miyota movement pieces, and also manufacture multi-wood watches, avoiding dyes and consistently using recycled wood. The woods they use are hypo-allergenic and not treated with chemicals (meaning that none of their watches are waterproof). The designs are prepared in Italy and the watches are manufactured in Indonesia and China. WeWOOD watches were launched in the United Kingdom shortly after appearing in the United States, with the novelty capturing a niche market and expanding ever since. According to WeWOOD the company plants a tree for every watch sold, and by the end of 2013 the company had planted 250,000, with nearly six times that number by the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the late 2010s they also branched out into making wooden furniture once their North American regional office located in Los Angeles opened, and they continue to push for eco-friendly innovations in the watchmaking industry in the 2020s.
