“Welcome Back, Kotter” is an American sitcom depicting the successes and failures of a high school teacher in charge of a racially and ethnically diverse remedial education class nicknamed the Sweathogs. Recorded in front of a live studio audience, the series aired on ABC from September 1975 through May 1979. Stand-up comedian and actor Gabriel “Gabe” Kaplan stars as the main character, Gabe Kotter, a wise-cracking teacher who returns to work at his alma mater, James Buchanan High School in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York City, based on the real school Kaplan attended called New Utrecht High School. As writer/director/actor of the show, Kaplan successfully translated his anecdotes and reminiscences into comic scenes and sketches, basing nearly all the characters in the show on people he knew during his delinquent teens. Considered controversial and groundbreaking for its portrayal of teen characters (showing their antics as silly rather than criminal, akin to the Marx Brothers or the Bowery Boys), it launched the careers of Ron Palillo, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, and John Travolta, and produced merchandise tie-ins including dolls, lunchboxes, trading cards, comic books, and even a board game. The popular theme song, “Welcome Back,” was written and recorded by John Sebastian, former front-man for the Lovin’ Spoonful, and became a No. 1 hit in the spring of 1976. Despite its success the show failed to win any major awards, but had a lasting effect on sitcom writing akin to the influence of “All in the Family,” “One Day at a Time,” and “Taxi.”
