Walt Horton (1949–2010) was an American sculptor and cartoonist best known for his expressive bronze sculptures of children, wildlife, and Western subjects. He began his career as a commercial cartoonist, with his humorous illustrations appearing in newspapers and advertising campaigns around the world, before turning to sculpture in 1993 after being inspired by bronze figures he encountered during a visit to Aspen, Colorado. Largely self-taught as a sculptor, Horton developed a distinctive style centered on gesture, facial expression, innocence, and storytelling, often capturing children and animals in playful, tender, and humorous moments. His years living in Brazil and Bermuda also broadened his appreciation of people and cultures and influenced his keen observation of human expression. Horton and his wife, Peggy, eventually established a gallery in Beaver Creek, Colorado, where his bronze works continued to be exhibited. He died unexpectedly in his sleep on March 28, 2010, leaving a legacy of warm, whimsical sculpture intended to evoke joy and reconnect viewers with the wonder of childhood.
