Wally Schirra (1923–2007) was an American naval aviator, test pilot, and pioneering NASA astronaut, born Walter Marty Schirra Jr. in Hackensack, New Jersey. He was selected in 1959 as one of the original Mercury Seven, becoming the fifth American—and third in orbit—when he flew six orbits aboard Mercury-Atlas 8 in 1962, and he remains the only astronaut to fly in all three of the early U.S. space programs: Mercury, Gemini (notably achieving the first rendezvous of two crewed spacecraft on Gemini 6A), and Apollo as commander of Apollo 7 in 1968. A U.S. Naval Academy graduate and decorated Korean War aviator, Schirra logged nearly 300 hours in space, retired in 1969 as a Navy captain, and later worked in broadcasting and business before his death in La Jolla, California.
