John Herschel Glenn Jr. (known simply as John Glenn, July 18th 1921-December 8th, 2016) was a legendary Marine Corps aviator and astronaut who made history in 1962 as the first American to orbit the Earth during the Friendship 7 mission. Prior to his space career, he was a highly decorated fighter pilot in World War II and the Korean War, notably completing the first supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States in 1957. Transitioning to politics, Glenn served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio for 24 years, focusing his long tenure on public service and defense. In 1998 he made a triumphant return to space at age 77 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, setting a record at the time as the oldest person to enter Earth orbit. He received numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012, before passing away four years later as the last surviving member of the Mercury Seven.
