Wada Sanzo (1883–1967) was a Japanese painter, designer, and influential figure in the development of modern Japanese fashion illustration. Born in Wakayama Prefecture, he studied Japanese-style painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and later became known for his elegant depictions of women, costumes, and textiles. Wada played an important role in introducing Western ideas of fashion and design into Japan while maintaining a strong appreciation for traditional Japanese aesthetics. He produced paintings, illustrations, and designs for magazines and commercial publications, and is particularly remembered for his richly colored costume illustrations and his documentation of Japanese dress. His work occupies an interesting position between traditional nihonga painting, commercial illustration, and the emerging field of modern fashion design in early twentieth-century Japan.
