Viola “Vidie” Burden Lange was born on July 1st, 1932 in Dubuque, Iowa. Her family encouraged her artistic talents and sent her to the Masters School, a private high school in New York. She married Robert B. Lange in 1950, and the couple returned to Dubuque, where she studied printmaking at the University of Iowa. Her first one woman show of her watercolors and oil paintings was held at the Cedar Falls Art Gallery in 1952. She continued her studies of art, photography, and history at Clarke College, as well as the Art Institute of Chicago. The couple moved to Colorado in 1969, where she studied video and computer imagery at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Lange went on to teach art and photography classes at Colorado Mountain College and at Lac Court Oreilles Indian Reservation in Wisconsin. She established the Lumina Workshop in Boulder, Colorado, where she taught photography from 1977 to 1984. Her work is in many museum collections including the Denver Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery, the New York Public Library, and the Smithsonian Institute. She passed away on May 9th, 2016.
