Vintage Sri Lankan Carved Wood Tribal Mask. Sri Lankan tribal mask with large eyes and gilt accessories, possibly of the God of Dumness, Golu Sanniya.
Sri Lankan tribal masks, deeply rooted in the island’s ancient traditions, are vibrant, hand-carved wooden artifacts used in rituals, healing ceremonies, and theatrical performances. Originating from indigenous beliefs and influenced by Buddhist and Hindu symbolism, these masks often depict demons, deities, animals, and mythological figures, each with distinct features meant to ward off evil or embody spiritual forces. Particularly famous are the Kolam, Raksha, and Sanni masks—each serving different cultural roles, from comedic folk theatre to exorcistic healing dances intended to cure illnesses believed to be caused by malevolent spirits.
