Vintage Persian Lilihan Hand-Knotted Wool Rug. Featuring a classic red field adorned with floral sprays and side medallions. Very minimal fringe.

Size: 32 x 58 in.

Persian Lilihan rugs originate from the village of Lilihan in the Arak region of western Iran, where ethnic Armenian weavers settled and developed a thriving carpet industry beginning in the 17th Century. Inspired by neighboring Sarouk styles but tailored for export to American and European markets in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, these carpets gained high acclaim for their plush, durable construction and refined craftsmanship. Stylistically, Lilihans are distinguished by their signature salmon-pink or dusty-rose fields, a result of using rose-dyed cotton wefts that create a warm, distinctive background tone. Their ornate compositions predominantly feature curvilinear floral sprays, stylized flower baskets, and medallion motifs surrounded by intricate botanical borders, though occasional geometric designs like goat horn or fish patterns are also crafted. Structurally woven with high-grade local wool using a single-weft Hamadan technique, Lilihans offer a velvety, thick pile that sets them apart from double-wefted Sarouks.
