The weaving tradition of Pakistani rugs dates back to the 16th Century, when Mughal emperors imported Persian master weavers to establish court workshops in major cities like Lahore. Following the 1947 partition of India, skilled Muslim weavers migrated to Pakistan, transforming cities like Peshawar, Karachi, and Multan into thriving centers for commercial carpet production. The regional style is defined by fine hand-knotting techniques, frequently using the asymmetric Senneh knot, and a plush pile woven from high-grade local spinning wool blended with imported Australian wool or silk. The vast variety of Pakistani rugs encompasses classic Bokhara patterns with geometric gul medallions, Ziegler Chobi rugs featuring antique stonewashed finishes, and intricate Caucasian or Persian-inspired floral motifs. Colors range from deep jewel tones of ruby red, indigo, and ivory in traditional pieces to soft, muted earth tones in modern vegetable-dyed weaves. Today, hand-knotted Pakistani rugs are prized internationally for combining luxurious softness, remarkable knot density, and timeless historical designs suitable for traditional and contemporary interiors alike.
