Jakob Beck’s glass factory, founded in Riga in 1886, was a pioneer in Latvian glass making and later renamed Ilģuciems Glass Factory in 1927. In the mid 1930s Ilģuciems became the first Latvian factory to collaborate with professional artists, promoting the development of high-quality, decorative glass items that were exported throughout Europe. The Nazi Occupation led to the closure of the factory for the duration of the war, but after being revived during the Soviet era the name was retained due to their high reputation, and they collaborated with glass artists and students from the Art Academy of Latvia. In 1960, however, the name was officially discontinued when the company was absorbed into the Riga Glass Factory, and many of their pieces are now found in museums and private collections of Bohemian glass around the world.
