Franklin Simon & Co. was a pioneering New York City department store chain founded in 1902 by Franklin Simon and Herman A. Flurscheim. Unlike traditional dry goods stores of the era, it was designed as a collection of specialty shops focusing on high-quality ready-to-wear fashion for the entire family, with a key part of the store’s strategy importing European merchandise and selling it at prices competitive with domestic goods. Its landmark flagship store, opened in 1903 at 414 Fifth Avenue, was notably the first major retailer to establish itself on Fifth Avenue above 34th Street, and over the decades the company expanded into various states and merged with Oppenheim Collins & Co. after being acquired by City Stores Company. The chain ultimately ceased operations in 1979 when its parent company filed for bankruptcy, leading to the closure of all 42 locations.
