Venezia ’79 – La Fotografia was a major international photography event held in Venice from June 16 to September 16, 1979, under the patronage of UNESCO, the Comune di Venezia, and the International Center of Photography. It comprised 26 exhibitions and 46 workshops, showcasing around 3 500 works by roughly 500 photographers and offering seminars and courses taught by leading figures in the field to about 1 000 students from around the world. The event brought together historical masters such as Robert Capa, Henri Cartier‑Bresson, and Diane Arbus alongside contemporary voices, making it one of the most ambitious and influential photography exhibitions in Italy at the time and a cultural milestone in recognizing photography as a significant artistic medium.
